Is Mounjaro Safe? What a GP Checks Before Prescribing

Mounjaro (tirzepatide) is a clinically proven, licensed medication with an impressive safety record in large-scale trials. But like all prescription medicines, it isn't right for everyone — and getting a proper medical assessment before starting is essential.

At Fylde Private Medical, every Mounjaro patient is assessed in person by a GMC-registered GP. Here's exactly what we look for.

Medical History Review

Before prescribing Mounjaro, your GP will review:

• Your current medications (some may interact with tirzepatide)

• Any history of pancreatitis

• Thyroid conditions, particularly medullary thyroid cancer or MEN2 syndrome (contraindications)

• Gallbladder disease

• Kidney or liver function

• History of eating disorders

• Current pregnancy or plans to become pregnant

BMI and Weight-Related Conditions

Mounjaro is appropriate when your BMI is 30+ (obese), or 27+ with a weight-related condition such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, or sleep apnoea. Your GP will confirm this during consultation.

Common Side Effects and How We Manage Them

Most side effects are mild and temporary, particularly in the first 4 weeks at the starter dose:

• Nausea — most common, usually improves after week 2-3

• Constipation or diarrhoea — manageable with hydration and diet adjustments

• Reduced appetite — often welcomed, but your GP monitors for adequate nutrition

• Mild fatigue — typically short-lived

Serious side effects are rare. Because you're under the care of a real GP at Fylde Private Medical, any concerns can be raised directly not via an online form.

Why In-Person Assessment Matters

Online prescribers use questionnaire-based assessments. These cannot replicate a face-to-face examination, a full medication review, or the clinical judgement of a doctor who knows your history. Our GPs can identify contraindications that a questionnaire might miss and that's a meaningful safety difference.
