Ultrasound Scan: Arterial Duplex
A leg artery ultrasound is a non-invasive and painless diagnostic test that uses ultrasound technology to produce images of the arteries in the legs, from the abdomen down to the ankle.
These arteries are responsible for carrying blood away from the heart to supply the lower extremities. This test allows healthcare professionals to assess blood flow and identify any narrowing or blockages in the arteries, which can be crucial for diagnosing and managing vascular conditions.
Procedure Details:
Safety and Effectiveness: The leg artery ultrasound is a safe and effective procedure with no associated risks. It does not involve radiation or needles, making it a preferred method for vascular assessment.
Process:
A clinical vascular scientist will apply a conductive gel to the patient's leg.
An ultrasound probe is then used to examine the arteries from the groin down to the ankle.
In some cases, the scan may also include the abdominal arteries to provide a comprehensive assessment.
Duration: The entire procedure typically takes between 30 to 60 minutes.
Clinical Importance
The leg artery ultrasound is crucial for:
Assessing Blood Flow: This test provides real-time images and data on blood flow within the leg arteries, helping to detect abnormalities.
Identifying Narrowing or Blockages: It can identify atherosclerosis (plaque buildup) and other conditions that cause narrowing or blockages in the arteries.
Early Diagnosis and Management:
Early detection of arterial issues can lead to timely treatment, preventing complications such as peripheral artery disease (PAD), which can lead to pain, mobility issues, and in severe cases, amputation.
By offering detailed insights into the vascular health of the legs, this ultrasound test aids healthcare providers in developing effective treatment plans and monitoring the progress of interventions.

Ultrasound Scan: Carotid Arteries
A carotid ultrasound scan, also referred to as a 'carotid duplex' or 'carotid Doppler', is a non-invasive imaging test that uses ultrasound technology to visualize the main arteries in the neck.
These arteries are responsible for carrying blood to the eyes and brain, and the test is instrumental in assessing the blood flow within them. It is a safe and effective diagnostic tool to detect any narrowing or blockages in these arteries.
Arteries Assessed
Common Carotid Arteries: Examined from their origin to the point of bifurcation, where they split into two branches.
Internal and External Carotid Arteries: These branches are crucial for supplying different regions of the head and brain.
Vertebral Arteries: Also evaluated during the scan, as they contribute to the overall blood supply to the brain.
Function of the Test
Structure Assessment
The carotid ultrasound scan provides detailed images of the blood vessels' structure.
Blood Flow Measurement
The duplex or Doppler aspect of the test measures the rate of blood flow through the arteries, providing additional information on vascular health.
Clinical Importance
A carotid ultrasound scan is essential for identifying potential issues such as atherosclerosis (narrowing due to plaque buildup) and stenosis (blockages), which can increase the risk of stroke. By evaluating both the structure and flow of blood through the carotid arteries, healthcare providers can make informed decisions regarding the management and treatment of conditions that affect cerebral circulation.

Ultrasound Scan: Head and Neck
This examination is performed to examine the soft tissues of the anterior neck and head. This includes examining areas like; the thyroid and its parathyroid glands, the salivary glands, lymph node assessment in the cervical region, soft tissue swelling , lumps and bumps in the head and neck.
A comprehensive study is undertaken to make clinical diagnosis on conditions like:
Inflammatory thyroid diseases and nodules being it benign or malignant
Acute and chronic salivary gland conditions, tumours and trauma
Lumps, bumps and any tumours confined to the different triangles of the neck and the head
Carotid assessment in cerebrovascular accidents.
What Does a Neck Ultrasound Show?
Several abnormalities in the neck can be revealed by an ultrasound examination.
A thyroid nodule is a mass in the thyroid gland that may be solid or filled with fluid. A nodule in the neck may be benign (not cancerous) or malignant (cancerous), and an ultrasound of the neck may indicate its size, shape, and location.
Inflammation of the thyroid gland is known medically as thyroiditis. Inflammation manifests itself in a variety of ways, and a neck ultrasound may detect changes in swelling, blood flow, and gland texture.
Lymph nodes are immune system organs that are about the size of a bean and have a significant function. If the lymph nodes in the neck are swollen, an ultrasound of the neck may reveal this and provide clues as to what could be causing the growth, such as an infection or cancer.
Saliva is produced by your salivary glands, which also aid in digestion by keeping your food wet. Salivary gland stones, inflammation, and other abnormalities may be detected using an ultrasound of the neck.
The carotid arteries and jugular veins, as well as the rest of the blood vessels in the neck, may be visualized on an ultrasound of the neck. Stroke and other cardiovascular disorders may be avoided if narrowing or blockages in the veins are detected with this test.
Muscles: An ultrasound of the neck may reveal the condition of the neck's muscles and reveal any inflammation, rips, or other injuries.

Ultrasound Scan: Venous Duplex
A venous ultrasound is a non-invasive and painless diagnostic procedure that uses sound waves to produce images of the veins in the body.
This test is instrumental in evaluating the veins' structure and identifying any abnormalities such as blood clots and issues with blood flow. Doppler ultrasound, a specialised form of venous ultrasound, can assess the rate of blood flow within the veins, providing additional critical information about vascular health.
Key Functions
1) Blood Clot Detection:
Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT): Venous ultrasound is commonly utilised to detect blood clots, particularly in the veins of the legs. Early detection of DVT is crucial for initiating treatment to prevent the clot from migrating to the lungs, which could result in a pulmonary embolism, a potentially life-threatening condition.
2) Evaluation of Venous Insufficiency:
This test helps diagnose venous insufficiency, a condition where the valves in the veins are damaged, leading to improper blood flow and potential complications such as varicose veins and chronic venous disease.
3) Guidance for Medical Procedures:
Venous ultrasound assists in locating veins accurately, facilitating procedures that require precise placement of needles or catheters.
Clinical Importance
Venous ultrasound is essential for the early detection and management of conditions affecting the veins. By providing detailed images and flow information, this test helps healthcare providers diagnose and treat issues such as DVT, venous insufficiency, and other venous disorders effectively. The ability to visualise the veins in real-time enhances the accuracy of interventional procedures, ensuring better patient outcomes.

4D Baby Scan
Includes:
Take-home photographs and video brochure - Patients will receive printed photographs of their baby and short 4D videos included in a digital brochure.
Price: Introductory Offer - £95
Please note that the quality of your 4D scan depends on your baby’s position. If our sonographer cannot capture high-quality images due to the baby’s position, we may offer a free rescan. If a rescan is not feasible (e.g., due to advanced gestation), alternative options will be discussed with you.
Although 4D scans can be performed between 24 and 32 weeks of gestation, we recommend scheduling your scan before 30 weeks. This is because the baby’s position and the amount of fluid in the gestational sac can significantly impact image clarity.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is an ultrasound scan?
Sound travels in waves. Ultrasound is sound which travels at a higher frequency than we can hear. The ultrasound waves are sent to and from the body by moving a transducer (probe) over the surface of the skin of the area to be examined. Images (pictures) are taken for interpretation by doctors and sonographers trained in this speciality.
Ultrasound scans can be used to diagnose a variety of conditions. They are also used to guide the position of needles for injections.
If you have any questions or require additional information about our ultrasound scan services, please don't hesitate to contact our dedicated team on 01253 207568 or info@fyldeprivatemedical.com
